What Is MM2?
What Murder Mystery 2 is, who made it and when, its roles, maps, levels and perks, and how to throw your knife on PC and mobile.
What is Murder Mystery 2?
Murder Mystery 2, usually shortened to MM2, is a round-based game on Roblox made by Nikilis. Each round, one player is picked at random to be the Murderer and another to be the Sheriff, and everyone else is an Innocent. The Murderer has a knife and tries to eliminate the whole server before time runs out. The Sheriff has a gun and tries to shoot the Murderer first, while the Innocents hide and try to work out who the Murderer is.
A server holds up to twelve players: one Murderer, one Sheriff and up to ten Innocents. Between rounds, players wait in the lobby and vote on the next map out of three picked at random. Alongside the rounds, players level up, open boxes for new knives and guns, and trade them.
You can switch between the game's modes at any time:
- Standard, the mode you start in, uses the roles above.
- Disguises plays the same way, but gives every player a code name from the NATO phonetic alphabet and a look-alike avatar, so nobody knows who is who. Pets and radios are switched off.
- Assassin hands every player a knife and a target. Eliminate your target and you get a new one, and the last player standing wins.
Who made MM2, and when did it come out?
Nikilis, a Roblox developer, made it. He created the original Murder Mystery on 18 January 2014, based on Murder, a game mode for Garry's Mod, and it became one of the biggest games on Roblox that year. As rival murder games added features it lacked, he rebuilt it as a sequel: an update on Christmas Day 2014 renamed it Murder Mystery 2 and replaced the original.
Weapons bought in the original's shop moved into MM2 inventories, where they make up today's Vintage tier. Three days after the switch, Nikilis added codes for free items. None works now, and our MM2 codes guide lists every one. The MM2 Wiki credits most of the game's maps to two builders, Zyleak and Thexz.
What are the roles in MM2?
Standard and Disguises rounds use four roles. Three are dealt when the round starts, and the fourth is earned during it:
- Murderer: one player. Their knife arrives ten seconds into the round, and they win by eliminating everyone without being shot.
- Sheriff: one player, with a gun. They win by shooting the Murderer, but if they shoot an Innocent, the Innocent and the Sheriff both die.
- Innocent: everyone else, up to ten. Innocents start unarmed, collect coins, and try to stay alive and work out who the Murderer is.
- Hero: nobody starts with this role. When the Sheriff dies, the gun drops where they fell, and any Innocent can walk over it to pick it up. An Innocent who shoots the Murderer with it wins as the Hero.
Your chance of being the Murderer, shown as a percentage, rises with every round you aren't picked; the Sheriff's depends only on how many players are in the round. A round ends when the Murderer is shot, when the Murderer has eliminated everyone, or when time runs out, and then the Innocents still alive win.
What are the maps in MM2?
Rounds are played on maps, most of them set inside a building and full of secret hiding spots. Some are played all year, and the Summer, Halloween and Christmas events bring back maps of their own. These are the MM2 Wiki's maps as of October 2026:
| When | Maps |
|---|---|
| All year | Bank 2, Bio Lab, Factory, Hospital 3, Hotel 2, House 2, Mansion 2, Mil-Base, Office 3, Police Station, Research Facility, Workplace |
| Summer events | Beach Resort, Yacht, Pier |
| Halloween events | Manor, Farmhouse, Mineshaft, Barn, Vampire's Castle, Spaceship |
| Christmas events | Workshop, Log Cabin, Train Station, Ice Castle, Ski Lodge, Christmas In Italy, Ski Village |
| Removed | Bank, Hospital, Hospital 2, Hotel, House, Lab 2, Mansion, nStudio, Office 2, Pond, and the original Barn, Mil-Base and Mineshaft |
Mineshaft and Barn came back as bigger Halloween remakes in 2022. Lab 2, a map from the game's first day, was replaced in the Season 1 update of May 2019. The wiki's tips call big maps such as Mil-Base, Bio Lab and Factory easier for the Sheriff, and Office 3, Hotel 2 and Mansion 2 easier for the Murderer.
How do you throw your knife in MM2?
In Standard and Disguises only the Murderer has a knife; in Assassin, everyone does. A knife can stab up close or be thrown, and the controls depend on your device:
- PC: press 1 to equip the knife, left-click to stab, and press E or right-click to throw.
- Phone or tablet: tap Equip, or the knife in your toolbar. Tap near a player to stab, or run into them to stab automatically. To throw, press Throw and, once it has loaded, tap a player: the throw only works when a green icon shows on them.
- Xbox: LB equips the knife, RT stabs and LT throws.
Sleight, one of the powers below, makes throws faster and brings the knife back sooner.
Can you play MM2 on mobile, PC and Xbox?
Yes. MM2 runs on PC, phones, tablets and Xbox, and the wiki gives controls for each. It came to Xbox One on 22 June 2016, with a knife named Xbox for players who joined there, and to phones on 5 August 2016. Since the Season 1 update in May 2019, trading has worked across every platform Roblox runs on.
To shoot as the Sheriff or the Hero:
- PC: press 1 to equip the gun, aim with the mouse and left-click to shoot.
- Phone: tap Equip, or the gun in your inventory, then tap a player to shoot.
- Xbox: LB equips the gun. The crosshair doesn't move, so aim with the right stick, then press RT to shoot.
How do levels and prestige work in MM2?
Rounds earn XP, and XP raises your level. Innocents earn it for every second they survive and for filling their coin bag; the Sheriff for winning, plus more for each Innocent still alive when they shoot the Murderer; and the Murderer for each Innocent eliminated. Rounds in private servers, trading servers among them, earn none.
Levels go up to 100. There, the game offers to prestige you: accept, and your level resets to 1 and a Roman numeral appears beside it, from I after your first prestige to X after your tenth, which is the last. Prestige adds no ability in the game, but it moves you up the server's player list, which ranks players by prestige first and level second.
Level 10 matters too: since 28 December 2021, an account needs it to trade.
What are perks and coins in MM2?
Perks, which the game now calls powers, give the Murderer an ability for the round. Every player starts with Footsteps; the others are bought in the shop with coins or Diamonds, and you equip one:
- Footsteps: shows other players' footprints and which way they went.
- Sleight: faster knife throws.
- Ninja: kills make no sound.
- Sprint: a short burst of speed.
- Haste: extra speed while the knife is out, enough to outrun Innocents.
- Fake Gun: a fake gun for the whole round, to fool Innocents.
- Trap: traps that freeze anyone who steps on one.
- Decoy: copies of you that can take a shot.
- Ghost: a few seconds of invisibility.
- X-Ray: a few seconds of seeing through walls.
Coins appear around the map during rounds for players to pick up, up to 40 a round, or 50 with the Elite gamepass. They pay for boxes, pets, effects and powers in the shop, and a full coin bag earns extra XP. Private servers don't spawn them. Diamonds, the shop's other currency, can only be bought with Robux.
How do MM2 items work?
Every account starts with the Default Knife and the Default Gun, which can never be traded. The rest you collect: knives and guns, which you equip in your inventory to change the weapon your avatar carries, and pets, which are cosmetic and follow you around. Effects, emotes and radios are extras that can't be traded.
Each knife, gun and pet has a tier, from Common up to Unique, and our guide to MM2 rarities explains every one. A Godly is an item of the Godly tier, one above Legendary and one below Ancient; a shop box's Godly usually drops once in 500 opens. Items come from boxes, events, gamepasses and crafting, and How to get Godlies in MM2 goes through each route.
From level 10, knives, guns and pets can also be traded between players, and the MM2 trading guide covers how a trade works and the scams around it. Every item we sell is on our MM2 item list, and the Godlies are also on MM2 Godlys.
Is MM2 OK for kids?
That's a call for each parent, so it helps to know what the game involves. Innocents hide from a Murderer with a knife while a Sheriff tries to shoot the Murderer. Robux buys extras such as gamepasses and Diamonds, and items trade between players, which the MM2 Wiki calls "an overall risk" because of scams and duping.
Buying items for real money outside Roblox is against Roblox's Terms of Use, whoever sells them, us included. Our Parents' Guide covers how a purchase works, what it costs, refunds, and the requests no honest seller makes.
